THE WALK
At 12:30 p.m. all activities ceased to allow everyone to participate in the one-mile walk, the central activity of this event.  Led by the Civil Air Patrol color guard, teams followed armed with posters and banners that proudly supported their loved ones with Down syndrome.

 A FAREWELL

GoodByeChris.jpg
Chris Burke and the De Masi Brothers

Chris Burke from Point Lookout, recognized by many for his role as "Corky Thacher" on the TV series Life Goes On (1989-1993) was greeted by cheers from our crowd.

Twenty years ago the brothers John and Joe DeMasi who had been raised in Wantagh met Chris when they worked as counselors at the Town of Hempstead ANCHOR program for individuals with disabilities.

Soon afterwards they formed a band.  Not only they have been an integral part of many Buddy Walks including ours but they have also presented their very special program "Everyone Can Be A... Singer With The Band" at schools and other venues throughout the world and have been invited to many TV shows like Good Morning America.

It is very fitting that a career that started on Long Island ended on Long Island.  So, we bid farewell to our three friends who, throughout the years, have shared their cheerful and uplifiting songs with so many!

Thank you Chris, John, and Joe!!!

Although the aerial show by Robin Lynch had to be moved to a more secluded area due to high winds, many were able to enjoy it.

THE BUDDY WALK®

The Buddy Walk® was created by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.  The Buddy Walk® has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to over 250 each year with at least one in every state across the country and many abroad.  The Buddy Walk program is supported nationally by NDSS and organized at the local level by parent support groups and other organizations, schools, and motivated individuals.

Alexander's Angels, Inc. has been the organizer of the Buddy Walk® on Long Island since its inception in 2007.  Funds raised benefit local programs and services, Down syndrome cognitive research, as well as local and national advocacy and awareness initiative that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome.
